The Real Mulan, According to Historical Record

July 16th 2009 07:46
I guess most people are not unfamiliar with the Disney Cartoon Mulan, made in 1998. What most people don’t know is that Mulan, is actually really a Chinese Legionary Warrior and like Robin Hood, Mulan actually exist.

According to history, there was actually four Mulans, the second and third were the most famous of all.

The second Mulan is believes to live around 1000 AC, her full name was Mulan Wei, also known as the Xiaolie General Xiaolie General was believes to be the oldest child in her family and Wei's father was believe to be an officer in the Chinese Army Reserve. During that time, China was been invaded by Turkish and the Emperor send his army to the far west side of China to drive the Turks out. In that time Wei's father was far too old and ill to go into battle, so Wei took her father's place in the army, disguist as a man.

The campaign against the Turks was believe to last for twelve years. During this time Mulan proven herself to be a great warrior and military leader and eventually been promote to General. Throughout the twelve year campaign, Mulan never reveal her identity as a woman and it was only until the war is over, where Mulan revealed her female identity.

Because of Mulan Wei’s great contribution to China, the Emperor rewarded Mulan handsomely, including giving her a high ministerial position within the Imperial government, with an extremely high salary, for the record, during ancient China, a woman was not allow to become a member of the government and Mulan was one of the few exceptions. However, Mulan decline the Emperor’s offer and hang in her resignation to the Emperor to retire from the army.

The Emperor greatly admired Xiaolie General, as a warrior and wished for her to be married into the royal family. Mulan Wei refused the offer and said that it is inappropriate ritual wise, for one of the Emperor’s knights (Mulan) to be married into the royal family. When the Emperor insists Mulan killed herself to maintain her moral integrity.

The third Mulan is known as Mulan Zhu, also known as Wuzhao General. Just like Xiaolie General, Wuzhao General took her elderly and illed father's place to fight in the Chinese army to defend her nation from Turkish invasion, disguist as a man. Mulan Zhu was only fourteen years old, at the time. Mulan Zhu was believe to live during the time of Emperor Tangtaizhon, also known as Emperor Shiming Lee, one of the wisest Emperor in China's history. After the war, Emperor Lee awared Mulan handsomely and promoted her to become a General, known as Wuzhu General.

However, Wuzhu General's life ended tragically when some of the member within the Senate decided to plot against her and try frame her for treason, accusing her of plotting against the goverment and planning to become Empress herself.

Hearing such news and believe the Emperor has been persuaded by the evil Senators, Wuzhu General cut her chest open and killed herself to prove her loyalty to her counytry.

A few hundred years later, Chinese wrote a drama named Mulan Hua, a story that is base on the combination of Xiaolie General and Wuzhao General and Mulan Hua become a legiondary warrior within Chinese culture.

Mulan Hau has been remade into numerous of movie and mini TV series by Asian cultures, In 1998 Disney also made their own version of Mulan. Most recently in 2009, a new Mulan Kong Fu movie staring Chinese actress Zhao Wei has also been made

There should be some information on these women in the Chinese history section of university libary.

If you type "Mulan history" into a google search engine you can find quiet a bit of information about these women, listed below a whole bunch of website of Disney's Mulan cartoon. There are no information on the real Mulan on You tube, i checked.

I also found a pretty interesting site, about a 1000 years old memorial of Xiaolie General Mulan Wei, which is still in great condition today and is believe that is also where she were barried, but now I can't find that site any more, it disappeared.

Thanks for the info Nevar, what you might find interesting is that the Emperor's wizards were actually right about a person with the last name Wu taking over the crown from the Lee royal family, but it didn't happened until a long time later.

One of Tantaizhon's decendent who became Emperor lateronwards prove himself to be incompedent for the position (I am not sure what his name is.) as a result, he got sack from been the Emperor by the Senate, (The senate has always been very powerful in Chinese history and has a strong influence over the crown.) however the senate also feared that by sacking the emperor will cause instability within the nation, with the princes now all fighting for the crown. So the senate was eager to be quick to find a replacement Emperor, the sacked Emperor's mother whose last name was Wu went to the Senate and nomiate herself tol be a candidate to take her son's place as Emperor.

The Emperor's mother has already proven herself to be a great accet to the goverment, when she was still the queen, so the senate agreeded and vote her into power and became the only Empress to ever exist in Chinese history. However, after Empress Wu, the power of the crown was passed back to the Lee royal family. Empress Wu, originally wanted to passed the crown to her brother, but the Senate didn't allow it, for reason I do not know, so Empress Wu once again nomiated her son to be crown prince, by this time the sacked Emperor had also been serving as a Senator for a long time and by now he has gain the respect of the senate. So, the senate agreeded, soon Empress Wu retired and hand in her resignition as Empress to the Senate and her son took the crown.
