The 11 Year old Gun Toting Girl Story is Fake

The 11 Year old Gun Toting Girl Story is Fake

If people are going to insist upon reprinting email as they are true then they had better do a little research first.

First start with a story about Illegal migrants called Resindez and Garza.
Add an helpless 11 year old girl (the hero)
Add a dig at Gun Control.
Mix it all up and you will hit all bases.

Evil illegals try to rape 11 year old in home invasion.
If not for liberal gun ownership this girl would never be saved.

Damn those gun control fanatics, damn them all to hell.

Fun over.

Now for the reality check.

The story is listed on mythbusting site called snopes.
here:http://www.snopes.com/po litics/crime/homeinvasion.asp

The story first appeared in the Liberty Post website 25 April 2007.

The original story cites this incident occurring in Butte Montana.
When the Butte Montana Sherrif was contacted by Montana Standard he replied and I quote: "This Never Happened."

The story is reminiscent of other versions that have an 17 year old boy instead of a girl. The story was written in 2006.

Even as far back as 1988 there was a story that involved an 11 year old boy defending the home with a shotgun.

The moral of this story is that it easy to relay email that support a stance but it is just as easy to blow their credibility out of the water.

There is no excuse for sloppy research.

Smarter people have fallen for lesser lies.

Rule one: trust not what comes via email.

Good going Damo,

Thank you.

Im so pleased their are still people that don't believe everything they read and have the foresight to research before assuming that stories that fit a personal agenda MUST be true.

Great link again thank you

You continue to be the voice of reason in this crazy Orble world...scary really

Thanks for your comments

I am only shocked that no one else checks things out before they give support to blogs.

As if everything written must be true

Ha, I must enjoy the occasional taste of my boot Damo, I wind up chewing on it from time to time.

That is a great site, I actually visit there to review things, but not in this case. For me it was a matter of time.

Sloppy on my part.

Media Watch is a fab example of how a story is published in one newspaper and numerous others pick it up without checking to see if it's true.

Have you ever watched it? It's totally fascinating what gets passed as factual and correct.

I think you need to have a a good read of Carl Sagan;s Ballony Detection Kit.
Pass everything through that first and you will see the alarm bells go off quicker.
here is a post I wrote some time ago: Really Long Link

Now go spank yourself.
KIdding.
Once in a while everyone gets caught to false information.

Thanks for your comments.

I actually really do like Media Watch. The older shows were much more witty I thought. Yet they still have good merit.
Good lick

Laziness or sloth?
You decide.
Either way it is a bad practice.

Gotta love snopes. I check it often as I get emails forwarded to me sometimes years apart but with the same stories.

Thanks for your comments.

Yep it saves me a lot of embarrassment and foolish mistakes.
So too has the Carl Sagan Baloney Test.

If the story seems to have a purpose then perhaps it only has an agenda.

O holy cow--do my eyes deceive me, or was that a polite post from our old friend above me?

Snopes is the first site I go to every time someone tries to pass off email stories.

Did you know that my blogmate on debatefan, Plagman, got into all sorts of major trouble because he wrote a parody of a news story and Fox picked it up and ran it as factual? Boy, the sh*t really hit the blades when that happened! Talk about your classic textbook case of failure to check facts...hahahahahahaha!!!!!!

A lot has happened since you went away. Long story.

Yes Snopes is becoming one of my best friends lately.

Plagman is devil in an unassuming suit. Good luck to him.

The world may need satire, but is the world ready for it? I invariably see comments on his stuff that assume he's being serious..

Satire is very imbedded in Australian and British culture.
We hate our so called leaders.

From what I see on US television I think American culture either finds satire odd. Yet they can understand irony quite well.

Just a personal view, don't hang me for it.
