Russia Ends its Operation in Georgia

The big boys make a point but the little people have to suffer it.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has made the following anouncements:

"I've decided to finish the operation to force the Georgian authorities to peace. The safety of our peacekeeping forces and civilian population has been restored,"

"The aggressor has been punished, having sustained considerable losses. Its armed forces have been disorganised."

The war that started so quickly appears to be over.

Silly Russians can't make their minds up?

Do you suppose part of the reason for the attack was to damage the pipeline? Whether or not it succeeded? Maybe Russia was hoping to discourage our efforts to have Georgia join NATO.

I made an illusion to Sudenteland, and was told that the comparison is not valid. Here's what US Army Col (ret) alph Peters, author of 23 books, including the new adventure-travel memoir, Looking for Trouble, which features several chapters of his experiences in Georgia and the Caucasus, said on the subject:

"Oh, and as for those Russian claims that it "had to protect its citizens," well, the Russians simply handed out passports to South Ossetians over the years in a de facto annexation the world ignored. Those "Russian citizens" are about as Russian as the citizens of Tulsa, Oklahoma."

He also writes about the oil pipeline:
As of this writing, at least a dozen attempts have been made to hit the crucial Caspian-Black Sea gas pipeline from the air-without success thus far.

This shows how inept was the performance of the air force, Putin's pride.

Thank for your comments.

I think that they did their dance and decided to leave early.

Thanks for your comments.
I think the pipeline was incidental.
If they wanted to they could wiped the whole thing out.
There are bigger issues happened that worry Russia including US missile defense shield being stationed in many of the former Soviet states.

Thanks for your comments.

I normally take opinions of retired general etc with a grain of salt. They are hardly ever disinterested observers and have dedicated a career to one side. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it does skew how objectively I read their opinions. For example: "My generals tell me that the evil army is evil, stupid and unprofessional. I ignore the traitors that said otherwise."

There are a lot of issues involved in this conflict and messages being sent. Purity cannot be claimed from either side or their sponsors. Yet the new reality is that Russia is able to take action without the US or NATO being able or perhaps willing to stop them.

I will probably do a analysis in a few days . After I am able see beyond the fog of war rhetoric and jingoism.

You are absolutely correct.
This is a tragic situation where ordinary people are being made pay the price for the ambitions of a power crazy world.
