Pakistan In Crisis: Musharraf not quitting yet.

A random view on Musharraf by Imran Khan

Facing pressure from all sides does not seem to worry Pres Musharraf as he tries to stare down his impeachment. Even key elements of the military and his own party have abandoned him and have asked for his resignation rather than face the humiliation of an impeachment.

So far Perves Musharraf has handled the situation with the same level of resistance that he has in the past. He is trying to weather the storm of accusations without budging an inch. The only actions he can take to save his Presidency is dissolve parliament or declare a state of emergency again. With armed forces no longer offering blind support the state of emergency may be a very short backfire. Dissolving parliament is also a problem as would be seen as yet another attempt by a despot to cling to power at all costs. It would threaten to tear the nation apart and might also cause the USA to stop pouring billions of dollars into the military. All that is left for Musharraf is a final impassioned plea to convince the critical number of votes to again support him or to negotiate a comfortable retirement plan.

The charges to be brought into the parliament against Musharraf are seriously designed to humiliate him. Facing these and losing would destroy any chance of a face saving legacy and even if he survived his reputation would be forever tainted.

Some of the charges include:
Musharraf is accused of sabotaging the economy, democracy, Formenting conflict in the Balochistan Tribal Areas.

Benazir’s Widower Asif Zardari has accused Musharraf of misappropriating millions of dollars given by the USA in the War on Terror.
“Our grand old Musharraf has not been passing on all the $1 billion a year that the Americans have been giving for the armed forces,” he claimed. “The army has been getting $250m-$300m reimbursement for what they do, but where’s the rest? They claim it’s been going in budget support but that’s not the answer. We’re talking about $700m a year missing. The rest has been taken by Musharraf for some scheme or other and we’ve got to find it,” Zardari said.
This charge is expected to be on the charge sheet.

The crisis in Pakistan has Musharraf’s previous blind support by Pres George Bush on a changing course as Bush referred to the matter as an internal Pakistani matter.
Regardless of how this impeachment turns out there will continue to be jitters over fate of the nuclear armed state as it goes through its power struggle.
