Midnight calls to Sri Lanka: Things are get bad.

Midnight calls to Sri Lanka: Things are get bad.

Things have gone from bad just a few months ago to worse in Sri Lanka due to resurgence of hostilities in Sri Lanka. This is the story I been getting from numerous sources and people who have traveled to the island recently. Late last nigh my wife phones he close friend living in Colombo to tell her that should would be coming there in the next month or two.

Near all the hotels are empty as the tourist trade has plummeted, The price of goods is skyrocketing and there is a constant sense of fear. People, women in particular are being, warned not to travel alone at night. Rapes, kidnaps and disappearances have become more common and nobody knows for sure who is doing them. Some are criminal gangs, other terrorists and other police or soldiers. The infamous white van visit means that someone is about to be taken.

Roadblocks are everywhere (again) to counter the security threat and some people have been taken away at these check points, never to be seen again.

Overall the sense of apprehension is get worse as Sri Lanka starts its slide into another dark time.

The pressure being placed upon Sri Lanka to find a peaceful solution is coming from outside nations. This is fair enough as many of those nations will have to take the waves of refugees that leave Sri Lanka. The government of the Sri Lanka is finally talking about peace and has started to organize peace meeting in other nations. After months of lobbying from everyone and seemingly being ignored suddenly peace is important.

Call finished near enough to midnight Australian time.
Not much else to say other than my wife is due to leave in August.

Not much to say except thoughts are with al involved, and it's bullshit that I had to learn this through Orble rather than the short sighted Australian media.

Thanks for your comments.
ABC television did do a story that pretty much updated the situation in Sri Lanka on the Foriegn Correspondent program. It will probably get repeated in the day some time.

The rest of the Australian media have not be helped in anyway by lack of official press releases from the government. This has led to a situation where it took more than three days for any information about the air attack on the airforce base that is beside the International airport. Unfortunately the press was forced to use LTTE (Tamil Tiger) website as the source of news.

Though I would love to have a break I am unable to this time. My wife know the country better than me and hand look after herself well. Since she is now an Australian resident it means that she has alayer of protection beyond the locals.

What else is there to do? You can't live in a cardboard box wrapped with cotton wool.

That's what I live by..but it's hard when a loved one goes instead of me.

You're both very brave; kudos to you. Let us know when she writes about it, will you?

Probably too ignorant to be brave.
What you don't care to know can't scare you.
Ignorance is total bliss.
