Sri Lankan Civil War: LTTE HQ being attacked from 3 sides
27-11-2008
The battle to take the LTTE (Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam) is continuing as I write this. Intense gun battles are said to have been continuing for prolonged periods of time. Attack helicopters and airstrikes have been aimed at targets within the city of Kilinochchi (the LTTE de facto capital).
The Guardian UK, Voice of America, AFP and Press Trust of India are all reporting on the Imminent fall of Kilinochchi.
The press frenzy was sparked by defence ministry spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella when he told journalists in Colombo, “The fall of Kilinochchi is imminent.”
The significance of the timing of this announcement could not have been more striking as the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is expected to make an important announcement to mark the tigers' Hero's Day tomorrow. Prabhakaran is believed to be in Kilinochchi for Hero’s Day and if the capital falls into Government Forces control on that day it will be a heavy blow for the once invincible LTTE. The will have lost their HQ of operations, symbolic capital for separate state and possibly their leader. It will be blow that will be unlikely to recover from.
The official confirmation of any capture of Kilinochchi will be announced by the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Myapologetics will report on any new developments as they occur.
Editorial Comment:
So far the Civil War in Sri Lanka has cost over 70,000 lives.
Currently there are said to be over 200,000 civilians trapped in the war areas.
