The Hon Consulate for Sri Lanka Dr Rodney Arambewela

After 21 years of service as the Honorary Consulate for Sri Lanka has decided to retire from his post in Melbourne Australia. Dr Rodney Arambewela was appointed to the position in 1987 by the government of Sri Lanka and holds the position until his replacement this year. The position of Hon Consulate is a demanding one where people normally last no more than 2 – 3 years. The tenure by Dr Arambewela has smashed all records last year when it was noted that it exceeded 20 years.

According Dr Arambewela he attributes the secret of his endurance to the support of his family and a desire to give back to his nation and people some appreciation for all that his country has done for him. After 21 years Dr Rodney Arambewela achievements stand out in both the Sri Lankan and the Australia communities.

Dr Rodney Arambewela is currently teaching Marketing at Deakin University in Melbourne Australia and will continue to participate in community service programs despite giving up his official title.

The retirement will be official in August after a replacement has been found.

Editorial Comment:
Perhaps Dr Rodney's greatest achievement was his dedication to maintaining peace within the Sri Lankan community in Australia. In this regard he was absolutely determined and used every occasion possible reach out all people in society, even those that could be seen as enemies. All large events, including the the national day celebrations, included people from all sectors of the Sri lankan ethnic mix. This included: Sinhalese, Tamil, Burger, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and Christian.

I will leave you with his favorite quote from Hemingway:
“A man can be destroyed but not defeated"
