I call it Kill Dozer

I call it Kill Dozer
kd2
'I have an idea....' Famous last words.

Here is something that you do not see every day. Yet in the midst of a war innovation is the born of desperation. The images that follow are of a bulldozer that was modified for a suicide attack a decade ago. Kill Dozer has been sitting in its spot for all this time.

Kill Dozer was a bulldozer covered in armor plate a mesh to prevent Rocket Propelled Grenades from penetration. The plan was to drive into the Garrison at Elephant Pass in Sri Lanka and explode it. The plan was thwarted when a soldier climbed into Kill Dozer and dropped some grenades inside. The soldier died in the process but Kill Dozer was disabled. According to government sources they found two cadres who were handcuffed to the controls and sealed in.

The best made plans of mice and men.

For 10 years it has sat at Elephant Pass as a monument to LTTE bravery but now it has being shown as a monument to the bravery of the Sri Lankan soldier who died disabling it.

Kill Dozer is certainly one of the lost unusual innovations of war and will no doubt continue to be use a shrine by both sides in the conflict.

Wasn't Killdozer a 70s B-grade horror flick ...?

Thanks for your comments.
I found the pictures and start to wonder.
How much planning was involved in this?

People sure get creative when it comes to killing each other, don't they, Damo? Now if they could harness some of that creativity towards a cure for cancer...

I am just amazed at how much work has gone into making Kill Dozer. You can see that this was designed on paper before being built.

The last time I saw this was late night on Channel 10 about 20 years ago.

Thanks for your comments.

It does stop RPG's (Rocket propelled grenades) in most case. The RPG hits the mess and bounces off before it explodes.

The Sri Lankan Navy have similar mesh on their war ships and I have seen video of Australian tanks in Iraq with mesh.

So if civil war ever breaks out in Australia go get a layer of mesh.

Marvin Heemeyer's killdozer that he used to attack Granby Colorado was way better. It was completely impenetrable. 200 shots and 3 explosives couldnt stop him. They even had to put the national guard on stand by. read about it.

KIll Doser was a desperate act of suicide terrorism. The occupants were hand cuffed inside so that they could not escape. It was taken out but one man and a hand grenade who save countless others.

Marvin Heemeyer was just some nut taking a civilian area. I would have expected the destruction to be far worse when there is no expectation or preparation against the attack.

Both indeed were senseless and points acts that achieved no gains.
