How is the world looking at the Dr Haneef case? Perceptions.
This just a study of how world headlines are following a hot story by looking at headlines from the last 24 hours.
I have selected the most prominent headlines from around the world to see how Australia’s reputation is effected by the handling of this case. This is not to question Dr Haneef’s guilt or innocence but to examine the perceptions about the handling of this case.
Most of the headlines were selected from Indian Newspapers because Dr Haneef is an Indian national. I included Malaysia Star and BBC to compare attitudes.
I have tried to avoid radical newspapers and focused upon the mainstream influential media with a professional attitude. The name of the publication the article name and the link have been provided for your reference.
It makes very ugly reading for anyone expecting to see wide spread support for the government’s actions. Most stories despite taking an objective look at Dr Haneef were not afraid to highlight the inconsistencies and mistakes. One editorial from India Daily is calling pure racism and Times Now India has already started an online poll about Dr Haneefs treatment. (see below for the results)
Anyway it the headlines alone tell a story about perception.

Online survey results
Do you think Aus govt is right in labelling Haneef as a 'terrorist' and subjecting him to solitary confinement for 23-hrs a day?
Yes = 10% No = 40% Not sure = 50%
The results of this survey had the second sharpest split of any result on the same page. Note the wording of the question mentions ‘Solitary confinement.’ In ‘yes verses no’ it means 65% of opinions say that Australia is not treating Dr Haneef fairly.
In conclusion all can say is two words: Election Year.

however, what might be scarier still is that australian's know of the laws, and still are accepting of them! we shouldn't be able to trade off hard won liberties, especially to this government, or any for that matter.

Thanks for your comments.
I think the India Daily is starting point to how this case may been viewed in the long run."Is it a case of pure Racism"
Haneef is in prison because the Minister decided to over rule the judge and send him to Migrant detention.
So much for the claim that they are giving the courts a chance.
It also seem very perberse that a person granted bail should be subjected to solitary confinement due to a legal technicality in the recent Anti Terror laws.
I think the hypocracy so obvious that this come home to haunt the government.
Howards talk of toughening the laws does nothing to dispel fear of abuse for political gain.
