February 8th 2012 23:46
I can't stop laughing when I was watching this
Shou-Fan, the girl who is talking on this clip is from Brazil
(This is the transcript, translated to English)
Host: It is very difficult to tell. Just like Shou-Fan there. If she don't tell people she is from Brazil, people might even think she is, China's Woerwa Tribe.
Other Guest:: Really look a bit like it.
Host: Did anybody ever made this mistake before?
Shou-Fan: Actually, at Taiwan, everybody think I am an American. And when I am on the subway, or anywhere, there will always be so many children around me and the children's mother will be around their children and then they start pushing their mum and say "mum, quick, there is an American, practice English with her." And the mum look so scare and the kid would say "Mum don't be scare." (Shou-Fan made an awkrad impression on her face) They all think I am an American.
Host:: Does that make you angry?
Shou-Fan:No, but I think...Why do they all think I am an American? I am from Brazil. I kind of think, this thinking from Taiwanese is kind of stupid.
Host:No, its not stupid, but it is very difficult to tell.
Shou-Fan: No really, there is once, I was on the sub way's elevator and an old lady ask me where am I from and I say "I am from Brazil" and the grandma say "Brazil, where is Brazil?" and I say "It is in South America" and she say "Isn't it at Boston, America?" and I say "no, no" and the grandma say "I am sure you have mistaken, I am certain it is at Boston." and I said "Brazil is a country" and she say "no, no, no it is in the United States." it is like, she think she know more and is so certain of it.
Host: That is funny, how did the old lady know about Boston?
Shou-Fan I'm not sure, but, it is because of this (Shou-Fan lifted up a clip board, with a earth drawn on it) this is the world map into Taiwanese's mind. This is Taiwan (pointing at the map of Taiwan on the clip board) and the rest of the world is all part of the United States (pointing towards the rest of the earth on the clip board)
Host: They think the rest of the world is all part of the United States
Shou-Fan: True, a lot of people from Taiwan are like this
Host: In the older generations' mind, the United States is the top dog. Sandra, you are from Britian, what do you feel about it?
Sandra: It is kind of true, they see a white person, their first assumption is that you are an American. That is the first assumption that comes to their mind. The last time I was on the taxi and the driver say "Miss, you are a foreigner right? American" that is nothing I get this very often, people look at me and say "You look really like a white person."
