Exploding Elephants in Sri Lanka

February 14th 2008 23:27
I was sent this story from a friend and could not pass it up:

The news is real.

Daily Mirror, Saturday, February 9, 2008

Local bombs to kill elephants

An elephant has died in Hambantota after an explosive device which it swallowed exploded inside its mouth. This is the eleventh elephant death due to this locally made device called ˜Hakka Patasâ, reported from the area in the last few months, the Forest Department officials said. The farmers coat the bombs with animal fodder.

Editorial Comment:

Ummm...ummm...ummm...

May be they were suicide elephants committing Jihad for their elephant brothers.
We should question all the elephants at the zoo and endure that they are indeed what they claim to be. Check their passports and deport the one with one. You never know what could happen if Dumbo decides to let one go whilst the kiddies are watching. They would be worse than seeing a whale dropped from a plane.

But seriously it is a sad situation because the elephant population has been decimated by poachers over recent decades. Farmer do have a the occasional problem with the pachyderms because they destroy crops. Often the farms are small and profit margin slim. The other issue is that wild elephants are not like you friendly zoo type. They have been known to attack with out warning. My sister-in-law's family have a rice form in such an area and on a recent visit they were confront by a wild elephant on the road at night. Fortunately the driver stopped the car and turned off the lights so as not to startle the beast and it wandered off.

I am sorry I missed it.

Thanks for your comments.

It is more disappointing than anything.
It would be a shame to lose more elephants when the solution could easily be solved with financial aid to the farmers for looking after them.

I'm confused, are farmers laying these mines to stop the elephants from ruining their crops or are these random mines that were placed around during war?

If it is the first that's pretty screwed up. With the low elephant population at the moment they should be doing everything but kill these elephants. It's not there fault farmers are venturing into their territory.

Thanks for your comments.
It is pretty tragic and I guess endemic in a nation where civil war rages.
You get nutty farmers everywhere, These ones are reported as laying the explosives to get the elephants.

Last time I was in Sri Lanka there was funeral being held in a rural area for a person who accidentally electrocuted himself setting a trap for a wild boar. It was his 240 volt pig zapper. Crazy hey?
