China Blinks in the Tibetan staring match.

April 25th 2008 22:51
China Blinks in the Tibetan staring match.
dalai
Suddenly the Chinese see some value in talks.

The Chinese Government has announced that it will soon be holding talks with an envoy of the Dalai Lama. China's official newspaper Xinhau made the announcement on Friday.

This move comes after years of resisting any such talks in the past. More recently after the riots in Tibet the official government line has been to take a hard line and refuse any any official communication with what they describe as a political agitator.

The pressure of the situation may be building upon the Chinese as the Olympics draws near. So far the Olympic torch relay has been stealing world headline for all the wrong reasons. Instead of goodwill and Chinese pride there have been stories of protests and Chinese paramilitary flame escorts.

The situation in Tibet is not following the script that Chinese propagandists had hoped. Recent delegate visits were interrupted by Buddhist monks emotionally pour out a list grievances to the world media.

So what has made the Chinese Communist Rulers Change their mind?
Was it the quiet diplomacy?
Was it the protests?
Was it that the situation in Tibet is uncontrollable?
Or have are they trying another tactic in the PR?

Rhetoric costs them nothing and gives the appearance of something but is in fact a puff of smoke Damo.

It's all about perception.

Thanks for your comments.

They have have already come a long way to resort to this as rhetoric.

Similar thing happen to Gandhi in England. He was invited to talk that were designed to fail.

Let's just see what happen in the build up to the Olympics.

Its fog here Damo,

I was thinking along the smae lines as Raven here, the Chinese have thousands of years practise in this sort of argy bargy.

I do not see them putting a crack in the wall of their total control. The talks may happen, but once the Olympics are over....watch out Dalai Lama, I would say!

cheers

P.S. The highly organized presence in Canberra was a surprise, just posted a rant about it, and how our gov. reps. agents etc apparently didn't see it coming, and the orchestrated abuse, intimidation and violence perpetrated by the hired student Chinese thugs, making this a first for Oz, maybe in the world, where a foreign country starts to dictate the play on our soil!

Australia for the Aboriginals. Don't you know those 150,000 people need all of Australia, and you ugly Europeans need to get out!!! Back to England now!!!!
Now I know why you British people are so inconsistent, but after all white people are evil.

Hey Fog having trouble logging in?
Thanks for your comments.

It could well be a ruse. Old PR tactics work well enough.
I do not expect an instant solution to the problem just because the Chinese invite a few enemies to dine with them. They may be thinking of how to get the world off their back until after the Olympics.

Similar tactics have been used in the past when British colonialism started to collapse. Yet I still think that Jaw-Jaw is better than war-war.

Thanks for your comments.

I cannot help but get the feeling that you have been reading the LaRouch version of history again. If you had have read any legitimate version of history such the ones that are easily available in every Australian library you would have had a deeper understanding of the vast differences between the Australian Aboriginal position and Tibet.

To quote a figure of 150,000 off the top of LaRouch literature assumes that there has been no mixing of Europeans and Aboriginals. The other issue that La Rouch fails to take into account is that the British Island immigration included Ireland and Scotland. More recent immigration includes Greeks, Italians, Middle East, Asia and Africa(not so many white people in that lot).

The only real puzzle that I do have is why you insist upon calling me part of the 'you British people' when I am not.

But hey if I can correct some of your misguided education I am always happy to help.

Hey, it's not about being consistent. It's about having a war against China and Russia.
And with the demise of Bear Stearns, we dependent on the NY Financial Community are finding out that LaRouche has been far more right than we dared to imagine.

Okay it is all about LaRouche and the imaginary war against Russia and China.
Yes, I can really see that is what it is all about.
Is there nothing that the great LaRouche does not know? Wow he must surely be a god amongst men.

However for the rest of the world,(those that are not inside the dangerous and oppressive LaRouche cult), it is about China and Tibet.

But please continue.
I am so fascinated as to why talks between the Dalai Lama and China are a bad thing.

Also, I noticed it's getting dangerous and oppressive just to make ends meet these days. For a lot of people.

I will try address both your comments here.

Talking not bombing is a No brainer.
Just link talking and no oppression is a no brainer.
Just living without persecution is a no brainer.
Just as thinking beyond the mottos and quotes from a cult is a no brainer.

I welcome the talks between the two parties and hope that the dialogue does achieve a peaceful solution for both.

The second comment you made is you attempt to engage in diversionary tactics. You want the subject to be about LaRouche's Global Financial Collapse conspiracy theory. NIce try Howard but the subject of this post is about China and Tibet.

I am happy to create posts about LaRouche and the CEC if you like but they may contain material that you find controversial.

Damo,

yes I totally agree, the old Churchill adage...jaw jaw...loved that one...the dear old snobby sot that he was! Winnie allegedly said of Aussies, when we refused to stay in Europe to defend Oz from the Japs, that we have "bad blood"...(or maybe that was after the Gallipoli defeat...)

Anyhoo, yes I totally agree, it looks suspiciously like a clever Chinese delay play, with Tibet talks.

And as for the Howard repartee...hehe...your retorts, taunts and rebuffs made me chuckle...hehe! on ya!

cheers

I was overjoyed to hear that China is prepared to have talks with the Dalai Lama. Who cares why - it's happened and it's fantastic.

If we care enough, together we can move mountains.

Thanks for your comments.

I am happy that they are going to make the effort.
Who knows what they will bring but the alternative was going nowhere good.

Boycott Olympics in China

China needs to get out of Tibet and also treat people in their country with fairness and respect!

Thanks for your comment.

I think it is a little too late and possibly counterproductive for a boycott of the Games.

Anon, a Chinese student here in Sydney was harassed by the police. Her mother took photos, then the police confiscated the camera, deleted the photos. Luckily, the police officer didn't realize that it's fairly easy to undelete those photos, and the student has gone to a lawyer with them.

Is that fairness and respect?

A French friend of mine was stopped by the police and told to go back to her own country.

Is that fairness and respect?

I just went camping in Booderee National Park, which is jointly managed by the feds and the Aboriginal community. They got the land back in 1995.

Was that fairness and respect before 1995?

Cibbuano,

Okay I try to be brief.

I don't think China is going to be sorted in the next few years. It is booming economy with the remnants of Maoism and socialism all competing for a say about its future.

Tibet is just one of many issues boiling away in China at the moment. We have some competing ideologies going head to head in the Tibet issue. One is Chinese verses Tibetan nationalism. The other is communism verses Tibetan Buddhism.

The news reports from Tibet indicate that this issue cannot be wished away and so the alternative of using force is looming on both sides. China may be able to put down a small rebellion now but it may also reignite some years later as bigger and more fanatical uprising that includes terrorism.

I see it as in Chinas interest to start talking with the Dalai Lama now whilst he has influence over Tibetans rather than have to deal with fanatics in a few years time. Some progress toward improved human rights and autonomy may actually fix many of the issues.

However I do not see the current Chinese regime shifting their policies without some kind of external pressure and scrutiny.

Damo,

I'm going to be optimistic about this one, and dare to breathe here on the side of true progress, okay?

I'll put my prayers and hopes in the fact that China is waking up to being a part of the same globe as the rest of us ... and with a bright future of trade in mind... perhaps happy to compromise with te sympathies of those who would 'shop' there ... I mean, what's one little kingdom after all, when you have the global market to consider ... for me?

Perhaps the only good thing to come out of rampant consumerism ...

Other than that I just wanted to say that in writing this comment I had rampant De'ja Vous (although I know you have never written this post before) and originally - and more to the point - I just wanted to say that I loved the title of the post more than anything!!!

I am putting my hope that common sense will prevail.
I am also hope that the spotlight of attention will cause a little thinking before they act.
