Government officials have blamed the LTTE for the attack.

The blast happened with in the vicinity of a police checkpoint near the Hilton Hotel and the twin towers World Trade Centre. Police have said that two motor cycles loaded with explosives rammed the bus.

This blast comes as the civil war in the north of the country is producing ever increasing casualty figures.

The map below shows the district in Colombo. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre is visible. Zoom in and out for a better look.

I don't know much about this group, LTTE. Is this a political problem or a religious one or what? Terrorists seem to be getting busy all over the world, don't they?

Thanks for your comments.

The LTTE are a separatist movement with a secular agenda of an independent homeland with in Sri Lanka. Their motivations are political.
The situation is a result of an ongoing civil war that started in 1983.
These situations are rarely clean cut and may be a tit for tat for something that happened elsewhere in the country.

Thanks for the info, Damo. I don't understand how suicide/homicide bombings could help any cause. But they do appear to be popular, don't they?

The suicide belt was invented in Sri Lanka after the Indian Peace Keeping Force entered Sri Lanka to put down the LTTE in the late 80's. There have been more suicide bombings by the LTTE than by the all the terrorists in the rest of the world combined. Like all terrorist the tactics are designed to provoke a severe backlash to justify further attacks.
The LTTE was formed after the 1983 riots that saw 1000's of Tamils killed.

If your "day job" isn't teaching modern history, it should be! Sounds like a deadly game of tag, somehow. There aren't any winners.

More of a student that teacher.
The situation in Sri Lanka is tragic more than anything.
The only winners are those getting wealthy from the war continuing.

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are at it again huh Damo? Those Black Tigers know how to party.

BTW, have you heard any news of the Htoo brothers since the surrender in 2006? Burma needs help now for sure.

Thanks for your comments.

Black Tigers are the prime suspect. It follows their MO.
However the LTTE rarely admit responsibility.

I have never heard of the Htoo Brothers, so perhaps you could inform me.

They're part of the Karen tribe in Burma, the twin boys started leading a cadre of rebels when very young, 12 or younger, depending upon who tells the tale.

That help Damo?

They're in their 20's now, but I am not sure that they are alive any longer; they surrendered to the Junta leadership.

We may never know what became of them Raven.
The Junta are paranoid and superstitious.

Thanks for your comments.

I only know so much because of my connect to the country and watching the history unfold over the last 20 years.
Other than that I try to stay out of the war of words and flame wars that are going on at other sites.
