Apple verses Windows: Making Computer Love not War: Free Downloads.
You checked it out and finally you have decided that even though you like the Apple Mac or iMac you just can’t afford it. Yes you love the interface and the operation; the uncluttered appeal but your wallet is a just won’t open. You could spend a couple of grand for a good Mac or a few hundred dollars for PC that will do the job. The question is do you want spend more for something that you cannot see any advantage in purchasing just to look cool. Looks verses Cheap or as they say ‘The Crayon verses The Brick’. Apples called crayons because of their infancy as the main graphics and film industry computers. These days PC’s can sort of keep up if you spend similar amounts as you purchasing the Big Mac.
Few people push their favorite games box or Internet surfing machine beyond a fizzle so they really care too much about marketing claims about MIB and Core throughput. (See I bored you already) What they want is something that works but looks cool at the same time. Why can’t those disappointed Apple lovers enjoy the look and feel of an Apple without the feeling of poverty afterwards? We they can by having an Apple skin on their PC.
Now we can compare Apple with Oranges or even Bricks by keeping the skin of the Apple and having nothing else.
Two Products free available to download are, TigerMilk or Flyakite, and they will turn you PC into the visual copy of an Apple OSX Tiger. Suddenly at the cost of zero dollars you too can look like an OSX buff.
TigerMilk is 46meg in size and so takes some time to download but Flyakite is only 27 meg.
I installed TigerMilk on my main PC to see if there were any bugs or issues with Windows XP. The program took nearly ten minutes to load its multiple modules yet each step was smooth and went with out a hitch. I was still running a CPU intensive program in the background as I did this and did not notice any issues. Once the program was loaded the computer needed to be reset to make my new reborn PC into a MAC look a like.
The verdict is I was suddenly staring at what could possibly be a MAC screen. The familiar little coloured dots on the corners of each window appeared against the pastel gray tones. Many of my familiar programs had new Apple style icons but many remained unchanged. Yet the thing that makes the Apple an Apple is its toolbar and sure enough it was there. Ergonomically the Apple tool bar makes the Windows Toolbar look like old and tired. The floating icons magnify when your mouse is passed over one and shrink again when you leave.
For people who want the look of an Apple but not the expense this is perhaps the best option. It is not any way an alternative to Windows but rather a new suit of clothes where style is more important than substance. It is a novelty in many respects but for those who spend long hours on computers any change from the Windows XP regime is a like a holiday. Some of the new functions are useful but die hard Windows fans should never install this as it may lead to a yearning to own a Mac. And we don’t want to go that far.
