24 Killed in 2 Bomb blasts in Sri Lanka.
Two buses have been attacked in Colombo killing a total of 23 people and injuring over 45 others on Friday June 6th 2008. The latest attack happened in the Mountainous city of Kandy where two people were killed with a on a bus. The earlier attack occurred in the capital of Colombo in the suburban area called Katubadda , Moratuwa near the capital killed 22 and injured over 35.
The Colombo blast was reported as being a claymore mine that was placed on a crowded bus and probably detonated by remote control.
“We believe that the claymore mine was detonated by a remote control device. The casualties were high due to metal balls of the claymore mine which hit the passengers travelling on the foot board of the ill fated bus,” Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara. The LTTE operative who carried the bomb onto the bus was among the dead.
Soon after the incident 50 suspects were arrested and so far 49 have been released by the courts.
In the meantime heavy clashes are taking place in the north of the country where 28 LTTE cadres were killed according to official government numbers.
The latest blasts come after a series of civilian targeted terrorist attacks since the cease fire agreement was officially dissolved late last year.
So far over 70,000 have died as a result of the Civil War.
Editorial Comment:
Buses in Sri Lanka are regularly overloaded with passengers almost to tipping point. They often have passengers hanging off every possible perch.

It still leaves me wondering how many are the faction's own work, and how many are that of agencies working for government, trying to keep the other side daemonised...
We will never know. It seems a lot of countries around the world today are hell bent on remaining in perpetual conflict, rather than find resolve, detente.
I wonder whether the arms dealers play a role in perpetuating the conflicts?
cheers and bad sad news...

I am not sure what you mean by factions.
However I do a lot of double checking before I put the stories about Sri Lanka up.
You get just the reported facts with no colour.
It would be too easy for me to start speculating beyond natural reason but it would also be unhelpful.
I have watch this conflict closely for twenty years.
So I am careful what I say.

Thanks for your comments.
In this case I do not think we can point the finger at the USA. They used to manufacture them in Melbourne too.

Actually the tactic is not so much idiotic as it is ruthless.
Having watched this conflict for around 20 years I can say that it is a typically designed to provoke a massive sense of outrage.
The tactic is designed to unsettle minds that know better into lashing out at innocent Tamils. That backlash will end up on extremist websites as justification for a cause.
So from direct personal experience I am careful to measure my words rather fan the flames of war.
No one wins with hate.

Maybe you should do a post giving a potted history of the conflict, showing its origins and the negatives/positives of both sides?

I did do a short version of the history some time back.

You can verify the history through independent sources if you like.
Try to avoid partisan sites as some do act as a recruitment ground for certain groups.
