Bhutto’s Assassination: Who has her blood on their hands?
Pakistan is currently in a state of crisis as riots sweep the nation following the assassination of Benasir Bhutto. The soldiers on the streets have been order to shoot on site any violent protesters. So far high level government sources have admitted that 37 people have been killed and this figure is expected to increase. Some analysts are suggesting that Pakistan is about to decent into civil war as it is torn apart in the wake of this tragedy. The mobs protesting on the streets are blaming Musharraf for her death and Musharraf is blaming Al Qaeda. We are looking at a tense situation that despite talk of civil war most likely will not do so. However one thing is clear a sizable portion of Pakistan are angry and determined to be rid of Musharraf.
So who is to blame for the death of Bhutto?
And who through action and deliberate inaction has her blood on their hands?
This is not a deep academic question but the reality of what led up to the assassination and the failure to prevent it. Key players in this saga are: Ms Bhutto, Musharraf, Al Qaeda and George Bush. We cannot discount any of these as they all have an influence upon the environment in which Bhutto moved. So I will start with the easiest one analyse first Al Qaeda.
Al Qaeda
Benazir Bhutto was a prime target for Al Qaeda for several reasons. One was the fact that she was a female leader and they opposed such things. The other was her commitment to The War of Terror and the elimination of Al Qaeda. It appears that they did do the actual killing based upon their own agenda and motives. The suicide bomber is personally responsible for her death and that of the people around. Yet the ones who gave the orders, knowing that they would be carried out are just as guilty.
Benazir Bhutto
Could we accuse Ms Bhutto of acting in a suicidal manner be being involved in Pakistani politics? On the day she came back from exile over a hundred people were killed in a assassination attempt on her convoy. By this time she would have been well aware that she was a prime target for a future attempt. Yet undeterred and defiant she continued her campaign to bring about the change of government. Despite enormous pressure from the Bush administration she did not ally herself with Musharraf.
Had she faded away from politics and not spoken up then she would not be dead today. And had she not spoken up there would be no serious opposition to Musharraf. Like previous leader who have known they could be killed she was compelled to continue her work despite the danger.
In essence Bhutto may have known that she could be killed but to give up would be worse than death. I would say that she not guilty because it was her duty to face danger if required.
Musharraf
Bhutto accuses Musharraf from the grave in her email to a friend in the USA. In it she stated that the poor security was no mistake. Her party supports have complained about the lack of co-operation that the Musharraf regime has given them on even the most basic security need. Such as radio jammers to block signals to remote control bombs. Musharraf had the most to gain from Bhutto’s death and may have been withhold security in the hope that his rival would be done in by another rival. A retire Security Chief of Pakistan blamed Musharraf for creating the environment in which this crime could happen. By intentionally exposing Bhutto to greater dangers he is also responsible for her death.
The environment that Musharraf has created in under his dictatorship has increased the strength of Al Qaeda rather than weaken it. He has sought alliances with radical groups rather than moderates in order to strengthen his own power base. In short his policies are causing Al Qaeda to thrive in Pakistan as if it is the safe haven every one fears. This more than anything contributed to their ability to hit Bhutto.
George Bush
The 9 billion in aid that the Bush administration has given is divided into 3 lumps. 7 billion dollar to fight the Taliban and Al Qaeda; over 1 billion for his Musharraf’s army and less than 1 billion for the development of Pakistan. The one billion for the rest of Pakistan seems pitiful in comparison the amount allocated to the military. The 7 billion dollars fighting Al Qaeda has been totally wasted leaving Al Qaeda stronger in side Pakistan than at any time in its history.
The blind support of the dictatorship has only increased the length of Musharraf’s grip on power. The silence at the last crackdown by Musharraf indicates that Bush does not know what do when his pet turns out to be nothing more than a well spoken monster. The pressure that Bush’s envoy applied in an attempt to unite Musharraf and Bhutto showed a contempt for democracy and justice for the sake of a quick fix. To this date Musharraf has never had to account for his lack of progress with eliminating Al Qaeda.
Conclusion
All the main suspects in the murder of Benazir Bhutto and how many have her blood on their hands. Unfortunately like most crimes in history the guilty will pretend to be working for the greater good and justify their evils as necessary. Pakistan is moving in a new direction today and no one can predict accurately where it will go. If Musharraf does fall from power it will be in part blamed on this event because Bhutto has now become a dead martyr and as such cannot be killed twice. If Musharraf goes down because of the backlash then Bush cannot walk away from this episode untarnished and unscathed. History rarely forgets complete and utter stuff ups.
