My Apologetics - October 2007

Head of UN IAEA says ‘No Evidence’ that Iran is Making Nuclear Weapons

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei has declared that he can see no evidence that Iran has a Nuclear Weapons program. This was not a throwaway line but comes after months of thorough inspections within Iran. ElBaradei also chided the Bush Administration for what he called ‘Anti-Iranian Rhetoric’ that making negotiation more difficult.

Ref:
ElBaradei on Sunday "said there is no evidence that Iran has an active nuclear weapons program

This brings the IAEA indirect conflict with the position of the Bush Administration who have on several occasions accused Iran of building a nuclear arsenal. One recent example was when Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice demanded publically that Iran give up its ‘Nuclear Ambitions’ before they are willing to enter into talks with the regime. George Bush was recently reported as warning that Iran could spark WW3. There has also been a series of saber rattling exercises that include the threat to bomb the facilities that under construction in Iran with the newly build MOB (Mother of all Bombs). The MOB is said to be the largest conventional explosive weapon ever built and is designed to destroy deep underground bunkers. Iran has threatened that if is attacked it would strike back with full force and has specifically developed weapons for the US naval ships in the Gulf. The sabers continue to rattle but so far they have not been drawn.

Why is the Bush Administration thinking about being involved in another costly battle with a nation that would more than certainly strike back? The lessons of Iraq seemed to have been wasted upon the Bush administration despite taking his nation to Iraq to NOT find any WMDs. Yet despite the statement by the IAEA the Bush Administration seems to want to press ahead with moves toward a strike or to have Israel strike.

The issue at hand is whether the IAEA statement will in time diffuse the situation or be totally ignored. It is unlikely that Hawkish NeoCons like Dick Cheney will advise Bush to slow down or accept this assessment. Similar assessments from weapon inspectors in Iraq were ignored before the war broke out.

The history of distrust between the US and Iran has loomed for many decades. The history of post War Iran included the hostage drama of the 1970’s and the US supported Coup in. It is unlikely that the two nations will entirely trust each other lightly.

The cost of an attack on Iran could be immeasurable and escalate to other locations in the Middle East like Israel and Iraq. The question of whether Iran could become a series nuclear power seems to be overstated by the Bush administration. Iran can only refine Uranium to about 8% purity whereas an atomic weapon would require enrichment of about 90%. A delivery system like a ballistic missile would also be required. The question of a dirt bomb being given to Terrorists by Iran required a leap of faith into the implausible. Dirty bombs are made up of low grade nuclear material and are more of a psychological threat than an effective means of destruction. The US abandoned its dirty bomb programs because they were deemed ineffective, easy to contain and clean up. Talk of them killing thousands is just fanciful science fiction. Any well made conventional weapon would be much more effective.

In the coming weeks will know what direction this confrontation will take. Right now the sabers are rattling as they seem to be perpetually doing in the Middle East. Will the sword of war be drawn?

Is The Concept of Pre-Emptive Strike Coming back to Haunt the US via Turkey?

The concept of pre-emptive strike is something that only became approved US policy after the 9-11 attacks and has been a cornerstone of the Bush Administrations War on Terror. This was a moral and social leap that changed the way in which war decision would be made for the future. It was argued that by attacking the attacker before they had a chance to launch an attack America would be safer. The principle was floated but it was not until the War on Iraq arrived did it really come to fruition. Saddam was said to have WMD’s ready to launch and a pre-emptive strike was required to stop the inevitable.

Initial battle field success meant that others who were label as terrorist states could be the next target for a pre-emptive strike. Iran and North Korea were held up as possible future target if things get serious. The current crisis over Iran’s Nuclear Program includes the rhetoric of sending US or Israeli planes to destroy the installations. Whether this is real or just saber rattling is difficult to tell.

Iraq has not become the Hollywood ending that we have come to expect from films like Rambo 111, Battle of the Bulge and The Battle of Midway. Yet despite the chaos and civil war the Kurdish region in the north of Iraq has been held up as the shining light of hope.

The main problem is not with this area but with the relationship with their northern neighbors Turkey. In particular it is Turkey’s fight with the PKK that has infuriated them so much. They have accused Iraq of giving the terrorist a safe haven where they can launch raid into Turkey. A recent spate of killings in Turkey has been blamed on the PKK in Iraq.

Currently around 100,000 Turkish soldiers are massing at the Iraq border awaiting orders. The Prime Minister has already been given the power of his parliament to launch a strike upon PKK targets in Iraq. Despite diplomatic talks this situation is heading seriously toward conflict.

Turkey wants the US coalition or the Iraqi armed forces to take action against the PKK. For the Bush Administration this would be a serious blow as it would create an internal conflict where previously there was relative peace. It would mean that troops and resources would be further stretched to meet the challenge.

The other alternative of directly fighting the Turkish is a much worse scenario. Turkey is the main US military air force base in the region and is a crucial hub to both the Iraq and the Afghanistan conflicts. By simply shutting those bases Turkey could cripple the US war efforts in an instant (ouch).

Any expectation that Turkey would be a battle field push over would be a serious miscalculation. Turkey is not the same as Iraq. Iraq has a prewar population of 20,000,000 whereas Turkey has over 71,000,000. Saddam’s defenses and communications to the frontlines were virtually crippled in secret raids months before the invasion took place. Turkey has massed enough forces on the border of Iraq to seriously match the 135,000 coalition forces. The sheer number is enough to make any battle field engagement highly unlikely.

What is possible is that Turkey will make a number of raids into Iraq and symbolically destroy several PKK bases. The result of which may cause a destabilization of the Kurdish region or the crushing of the PKK. No one can accurately know the answers. However if Turkey does strike at bases in Iraq it will be doing so under the concept of pre-emptive strike. A concept that the US Bush Administration promoted.

The Problems with Reporting on Sri Lanka

Just a few months ago the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) became the first terrorist group in the world with its own air force. The issue caused a major scramble amongst the press of the world to get pictures and find stories on the new development. In a short time images of the modified light training craft were beamed around the world. The smiling pilots were shown smiling from the cockpit and so too were the bombs. The press was so driven for the desire for images and the story that they took them from pro LTTE websites. In some cases the stories pretty much echoed what the site had laid out in their propaganda. The journalistic integrity of doing this may be questionable but many correctly responded that no one else had the story.

All the official Sri Lankan government websites made no mention of the air attack on Colombo despite world headlines screaming to for a response. As the Sri Lankan Government postulated how to respond the official LTTE version of events was dominating the airwaves. Weeks later the gap of information supply was recognized by the Sri Lankan Defense force as they announced that they would make a greater effort to publicize their version of major war events as they happened, instead of weeks later.

Punch for counter punch in a propaganda war is to be expected when the stakes of the ongoing civil war include the battle for financial support. News travels fast but often the entire truth travels much slower. Even with the mechanism of an obedient and censored news it is impossible to control all information. Missing pieces of information gets leaked via word of mouth and people rarely believe the official message from either side. This has created an opening for the propaganda websites. I won’t link those sites here as this is just inviting trouble. Unfortunately what may look from the outside as a reasonable display of a war situation can also be a one sided barrage of thinly disguised accusations and justifications. The attitude on some web sites scream about injustices in order to illicit support for fundraising, political agitation and armed retaliation. “Our Brave Soldiers…” is a common statement. “See the face of this suffering child…” is another common statement that can precede the justification of violent actions or the denial of well known ones.

The general indicator of whether a site is a news site or front from another group is how quickly they try to glorify one side as angels and the other as the devil incarnate. The clever sites do no mention the violence but instead happily take money that will more than likely contribute in some way to the violence. These days it is extremely hard for many organizations to raise money for charity because the instant assumption is that it will be used for buying weapons instead.

Politics permeates everything in Sri Lanka, even the apolitical. To get a job some people feel the need to use the influence of a politician. Politics also permeates the population outside of Sri Lanka. Most people may wish to stay out of the fray but they also know people who are involved. The roots of radicalism sometimes go deep.

It would easy for me to run off a dozen inflammatory stories about Sri Lanka, due to the amount of information that get passed to me, but it would also be foolish. What some people may think is a huge fight on a blog is barely a whisper in comparison to what it could be. The true radicals are not the uneducated village idiots and inbreeds that you may expect them to be. Instead they are very well educated, often having attended university and occasionally having doctorates. These are the cream of the intellectuals dedicated to a questionable cause. The only real high point is the fact that they are vastly outnumbered by intellectuals who not radicals.

Rumors can often abound and morph in to common gossip. When a friend says that someone we both know is now involved with the JVP it is a difficult thing to hear. When another friend explains how a person they met spent twenty minutes singing the praises of the LTTE and calling its leader a saint it become a little disturbing. The stories are unsubstantiated but the consequences of them being true is enormous, thus the ability to see these people outside of this possible radicalism is very hard to fight.

This is especially difficult whenever the issue of peace talks comes to the fore and how to get some of these radicals to see each other as humans before they see them as a dehumanized political problem. The problem of rumor and disinformation is vivid when you see hostility and accusations fly. Peace has no value for some people because it will destroy their status in the radical’s pecking order and so they will try to derail any effort at peace. “Better to be a master in Hell than servant in Heaven.”

Things that I have personally seen and found very disappointing have been: Branch stacking of local radio stations to control its news agenda; character assassinations of people who can help negotiate peace; bringing silent observers from radical groups to sit in on meetings; the hijacking of orderly agendas to bring up a litany of side issues and diversions; Using a peaceful platform to provoke an angry response; rewriting and retelling of history to favor one side. The list goes on.

News travels fast with radicals but the truth moves slower. It seems obvious that people who think that they are clever because they can make a few quips on a blog are really kidding themselves.

Images of Bigotry parading as Moral Purity
minutemen
I feel warm and fuzzy already.

Here is a small selection form the past where unscrupulous people would do anything and say anything to stir up hate . Usually the line of argument was based upon unfounded fear of being attacked. Other time it was based upon the sword of justice fixing up the evil doer. From pleading the victim to demanding action is such a small move. The word justice basically meant for many of these people the complete subjugation of the chosen enemy

Just When You thought that the David Hicks case was over his Prosecutor Drops his own Bomb

Hicks in better times
David Hick case is back in the news
In the Guantanamo Bay military trail system David Hicks was Case Number 2. Now you would expect such an important position would be reserved for clear cut easy conviction of some psychopathic killer who would an excellent show piece. You would expect someone who was caught planning an attack or maybe one of Bin Laden’s close associates. Instead we have a simple plea bargain case where Prisoner Number 2 pleaded guilty to a miniscule crime and is given a short sentence to be served out in an Australian prison. You would also expect that after 5 years of holding David without charges that the prosecution should have enough evidence to not require any plea bargain; A plea bargain that would see Hicks out of prison in December just after the looming Australian federal election

US mental institution provides internet link to people with dementia.

bang
Incoming blog
That’s right folks mental institutes must be now providing free internet access and encouraging the aging patients with dementia to start a blog. This is to keep them occupied so that the staff to not have to endure their mad ramblings. The doctor in charge of the hospital was quoted as saying, ‘These are some of the most dented minds on the planet who have completely lost track of their own sensibilities. One patient has driven some of my staff insane with her constant whining about Halal Burgers and suicide bomber coming to get her. The patient is completely delusional that she thinks that she is clever and sane. She seems to have a habit wrapping herself in the American flag for some reason like a child needs a security blanket. She has American flag blankets, underwear and even and American flag toilet seat cover and is completely delusional with a pathological xenophobic hatred that is most directed at people of Arabic origin. Some of the staff had to take her toy gun away but they have been unable convince her that she isn’t hiding an atomic weapon. So we did the only sensible thing we could do to protect our own sanity and let her start a blog. That way her insane bigoted delusions are someone else’s problem

The Cowardly Hypocrisy of Bigots that claim that they are not Bigots.

We do not need to search too hard to find bigots because they always trying to be centre stage. They need a platform to spew out hate in order to justify the total lack of self esteem that can only survive by finding someone worse than they are. They do this with the same courage as bully that needs the support of crowd before they attack an individual. Like bullies it is the retaliation that spurs them on and validates their primal hatreds

Who is afraid of the Dalia Lama? China, that’s who.

Boo!
Booh!
So George Bush makes time to entertain the Dalai Lama and award him a medal. What is the big deal? It is not like there will troops flying in to liberate Tibet. In fact no nation has stepped to say that they will do much about the Chinese invasion, occupation and oppression of Tibet. What has actually happened is little more that talk and discussions about a situation that includes some of the harshest oppressions that the Chinese can dish out. The history of modern Tibet has been done to death on the news media and in films like ‘7 Years in Tibet’. Despite the films, the investigations, evidence of executions, repressions and torture China has no intention of letting go of Tibet and has instead used it as a destination of emigration. The plan is to have as many ethnic Chinese in Tibet as there are ethnic Tibetans and the plan on the surface seems to be working for now. So why are they so touchy about an insignificant person like the Dalai Lama

There is a light at the end of this black smirch of history that saw retaliation as the beginning of the new shape of things to come. The time of GWB is limited due to the legalities of the US constitution and he won’t be able to come back for a long time. The Question of Turkey as an ally in the War on Terror

Just as the road to Russia has usually been through Poland, Turkey is crucial to any support for the occupation. In a tactical sense the occupation would frustrated without the co-operation of either of this country. Turkey is allowing US planes to fly in troops and supplies. So upsetting Turkey would in fact mean that the war in Iraq would be much harder to fight

Torture gets US Courts Approval: Official secrets protect torturers from prosecution

rendition
Controversial new film call Redition, coming soon.
It is not hard to see why anti-American sentiment is growing in the world when the very nation that presents itself as the example to follow resort to barbarism without hesitation. Sure the 9-11 attacks were a big disaster that frightened some people but they do not frighten people as much as torture does. To die in the instant of a bomb blast seems rather peaceful when compared to the systematic and deliberately sadistic torment and pain extracted over long periods. It is not noble gentle folk who torture it is the vilest depth of human perversions that torture. Torture can be shown to be ineffective to everyone except those that harbor sadist tendencies. It when these sadists rise to positions of authority that torture become a routine. How they get to those positions is convoluted but how they continue is simple, those who know what they are doing refuse to do anything

Diplomacy or Death: Some choices are not that hard to make.

Wars have a way of dragging on without much progress. Even world wars make little headway as nations are bogged down with the dirty and bloody business of fighting. Hollywood may see it as a lovely war but actor do get up after the camera is turned off and go home. Soldiers do not get to pretend dead but they do get to be dead. If only there was an endless supply of dedicated people without family, friends or wives to grieve their passing. If only real war was more like its fictional version then there would never be an anti war protest or a voice against the leaders of nat
