My Apologetics - December 2006

The Year that Was Orble: 2006

The Year that Was Orble: 2006

There were some surprises for me this year in both a personal and professional sense. Yet it is Orble that has given me a strange sense of satisfaction and achievement (deserving or not) over why I came here. I started with the Blog ‘For the Sake of Argument’ which latter morphed into ‘My Apologetics’ when Orble made my URL available. Stats started arriving in the mail and I continued to write about anything and everything that took my fancy. Most often I was just exorcising demons but other times I was just having a little fun but mostly I was practicing writing in the same way that people practice the art of conversation. The more you practice the better you get.

There have been a few surprises in the reaction I got to some posts that show the depth and diversity of opinions. As I have said previously I am not opposed to people disagreeing with me and I respect a well constructed rebuff. What I found surprising is when a post touches a nerve it has sparked debates between people. The question gets a good thrashing as two people put forward their case and supporting evidence. If there is such a thing as intellectual testosterone, it here at Orble.

This has been a turbulent year where we have seen major conflicts in Africa and the Middle East. The Lebanon conflict drew a great deal of attention possible due to the availability of film crews and it spectacular level of destruction. The Iraq conflict has continued to descend into civil war where we have become spectators to what many warned would happen. The AWB wheat scandal that paid $300 million in bribes to Saddam still hangs over the Howard government despite claiming ignorance about the twenty warning they received. The new Australian Industrial Relations laws continue to be a hot topic as it will affect every working person. George Bush appears to have had his own problems as approval rating slumps, unwelcome news come from Iraq and Rummy falls on his own sword. Steve Irwin took the international spotlight when he was suddenly killed by a stingray. The local spotlight was taken by two miners trapped under tones of hard stone. I can feel a mini series waiting to be made here. Yet the story that gave me the greatest reason to laugh was the cannibals, Wa wa and Niomi’s attempt to appear like a serious reporter. It unfolded like a soap opera of the television tabloid news industry cannibalize each other to get the scoop. I wonder what ever happened to Wa wa.

The pleasure I have from reading other people posts on Orble cannot be expressed in words, so I will not make a fool of myself by trying, needless to say that there have been many classic posts and some prime comments to boot.

Have a good New Year everyone.

Should Bloggers have a Code of Ethics?

December 29th 2006 09:10
Should Bloggers have a Code of Ethics?

It is a tough question for anyone who thinks that freedom of speech is an absolute and should never be restricted. However to put things into context we are all just guests at the muse of the Blog owner. Without exaggerating everyone who subscribes to become a blogger is not doing so on free and open land. They are doing so on a server that is owned by someone, programmed by someone and housed by someone who has to foot the bill for it. The bottom line is that it cost money to run a Blog host site. Hence the people who join this service must never loose site of the fact that if the site ceases to be financially viable it will be shut down. No asking anyone for permission, no discussion into its merits, cash flow will decide the fate as it does with all ventures.

A host of any kind has many responsibilities including the protection of their investor’s contribution. And the repayment of any bank loans. They also have a responsibility not to waist money with pointless litigations. Cruel as it may seem, business decisions are inescapable even in the utopia of a perfect blog.

There are also other considerations that fall outside the immediate financial concerns those of the content that they allow to be stored on the data base that they own. Like it or not they have a shared responsibility for everything that is stored and everything that passes through the site. Editors are responsible for what their journalist write and media owner are responsible for them. There is a question of responsibility and accountability for everything that a newspaper prints. Even if the paper is an extremist rag it usually tries to uphold a set of values, just to protect it self from being destroyed through stupidity.

The absolute right of freedom of speech and print is a myth that has never existed because it can never be defined. We have freedoms but they are traded off against other freedoms that would be destroyed by taking an absolute view of one. It may seem paternalistic by crushing of your freedom of speech but I have not made this reality and I certainly don’t like it. Ethics, codes of conduct and even morality taint the objective view of this, regardless which ones we subscribe to. Simply by say that you have none of these is a fallacy as your ethics, code and morality is defined by what you disagree with as much as you agree. Even anarchy is the morality of the anarchist.

The question remains one of what is it that we should be refusing to surrender and what are willing to surrender? If you think the answer is nothing then you have already surrendered to a system of values and codes. For a blogger their can be no hiding the head in the sand and pretending that we should be both outside and inside a structure of implied value. The sooner we actually say what those values are the less confusion for all. This not about enforcing a strict regime of static ‘Thou Shalt Nots’, but about making code that makes sense to all because it protects us all.

Protection from what you may ask? And why would we need protection?
My answer is protection from our own ignorance, stupidity, arrogance and intimidation. The ‘Sticks and Stones’ rule is fine for most cases but in cases where someone is subjected to reputation destroying lies and threats of violence we have to ask if this the actual freedom you believe in. As you answer just say, “Your Honor” at the end. “Yes Your Honor,” you may say, “I don’t see anything wrong with me threatening to rape this person. It is my freedom of speech to do so. And yes you honor I did falsely destroy this mans reputation in such a way that he could not make a living.” The ramifications cannot be ignored. Blogs are not digital graffiti where we can scribble and run away. It is a publicly stored record where you can most likely be traced. If not you then your blog host for failing to address a situation that they should have known was wrong.

So if we are to think about the survival of any blogging community we must ask what it means to us all collectively. In other words what are our collective codes of conduct? Should this blogging forum have a code of standards that ensures the professionalism and accuracy of claims?

I will leave these questions open for the Orble community to consider whether it is a worthy pursuit. As an aide I will include a link to help understand how others think about their codes of conduct.

HG Wells must be Rolling in his Grave

H G Wells must be Rolling in his Grave

"ooolllaaa"
“No one would have believed at the start of a new centaury that we were being watch…” ref: Introduction to War of the Worlds.

No ten year old alive could ever resist the call of this book and eagerly gobble up each page with eager anticipation of the next. War of the Worlds was an adventure that dragged you out of normal reality and introduced you to the Martians; their tripods and the death ray. It was a spectacular story that pulled no punches as is sadistically teased us and then blew away the dominance of Western Civilization building by building. You have to admit it was really fun being drenched in the vision of our demise.

Where are the Legs?
I cannot help but feel after recalling the introduction that this has to be one of the greatest opening words of any novel. Perhaps even to rival many in classic literature. In one paragraph H G Wells establishes the entire premise of the story and even hint at the psychology of the enemy we are yet to see. It has you thinking and pondering even before death ray one. It is a novel worthy of admiration and study beyond its schlock image.

Film makers have thought so too and have brought this to the screen not once but twice (1953) and more recently in (2005). There was also a popular double album in the seventies produced by David Essex and using the voice of Richard Burton to narrate the story. The two film changed the setting of the story to a contemporary America at a time of paranoia and fear. The 1953 novel played heavily upon cold war sentiment and the absolute trust in scientists. The ultimate weapon of the atomic weapon was used and failed as the wise old scientists quoted something in appropriate from the Bible. Though a satisfying and entertaining film it did not live up to even a fraction of Wells’ vision. Where were the legs on the tripods? Where were the legs? Instead we got modified flying saucers that could only hover and not fly. The more recent Speilberg firm put the legs back on the tripods and gave them much more detailed look. The advance of technology over the years was not wasted. Thought it is not the same as the original novel and tells more of a family theme than a lone mans struggle to survive it offered overall good entertainment. The unspoken paranoia was definitely fear of terrorism but also told with Speilberg’s humanity. A flag waving zealot could have easily produced another Independence Day with exploding White Houses and fighter pilot presidents to save the day but he avoided these clichés.
threeye
Tom Cruise without makeup?
Even couch jumping Tom looks convincing as the man blown by the winds of confusion and war. Yet if there is any real criticism it could be that the film cannot tell the scale of the original novel. The audio recording of the double album came out in an era of musical story telling. ‘Tommy’ by The Who and ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ by Rick Wakeman were huge hits. The true value of the album was is use of excellent singers and the golden voice of Richard Burton. As a bonus there was a book of spectacular artwork that captured the feel of the original novel perfectly. It created an image that was hard to beat.

leggs
I'm more of a leg man
So though each attempt tried its’ best to tell the story they all fall short of the original. If I had to give a decision on which of the three comes closest I would have to say the Musical album. It means that a future film maker will be tempted to reinvent the story again on another contemporary issue or we may get the classic we are waiting for. The final oddity is that it means the opera version of the story is still the truest. H G Wells must be rolling in his grave.

PS: A final mention should be given to the Orson Wells radio play for its sheer unexpected power in a time of prewar America but I will write about that another time.

The Adventures of Super Bogger

December 27th 2006 12:42
The Adventures of Super Bogger.

Super Blogger has a secret identity but who really gives a stuff about that? His mild manner disguise is but a distraction until he strips it off and becomes the hero within. He does not leap building with a single bound; try to out power a locomotive; nor does he even think about being faster than a speeding bullet. Yet he does have motto to live bye and that motto is as pure as live itself: Truth, Justice and the (insert county of choice here) way. There is no rushing into burning buildings to find the baby of a screaming mother who thought to save herself but somehow forgot her baby. No that is for some pretender who wears their underwear on the outside of his tights. Super Blogger does not stoop to that: a: because his underwear is not in a suitable state for the public to see and; b: because he is not sure that he is wearing it at the moment. He prefers his usual clothes that have not changed fashion since he bought them just after leaving high school. There is no time to think about such things when you are a Super Blogger

Pre-emptive Strike: Rationalizing Brute Force

I have often wondered what really defines what self defense is. After enduring the

complaints from co-worker years ago about how his conviction for assault was actually self defense it struck that this guy had no idea. He saw that his attack upon a victim with the aide of several friends was defensible because the person had reacted to his provocations. In a twisted way it was his “they drew first blood” excuse to pound this victim mercilessly. Fortunately the judge had a different view and imposed a jail term

Review of Doomagee death is going to happen

In a shock announcement Premier of Queensland Peter Beattie has announced that there will be an independent review into the decision not to charge Palm Islander police officer over the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee. This a total backflip for the Beattie government afte an intese week of public pressure over the case. Initially the Queensland Director of Public Prosecutions declined to press chages depite the Coronors report that directly accused the police officer. In what appeared to be a bazaar conflict of opinions the Director of Public Prosecutions rejected the coroners finding and instead accepted te excuse that Doomagee had falled down some stairs at the police station

Reflections of a Tsunami Christmas

Christmas Day 2004 I was at my wife’s uncle’s house having an extended family get together when a message came that there had been a disaster in Sri Lanka. Initial news reports were saying that just over 100 people were killed. Logging on the Internet gave vague indications of a seaside flood. It was only as the hours passed did the true story of the Christmas Tsunami come through

In a small town like Smallville everyone knows Clark Kent and Superman are from the same

place but everyone is to dumb to work it out. Either the people are blind or they are more stupid than the average. Yet here he is Superman fighting for Truth, Justice and the American way even though he is an illegal alien from the planet Krypton. Let us not dwell on that fact as perhaps is a good illegal alien. Perhaps he has proven himself to be a model migrant and has adopted the language skills and cultural adherence to deserve a place in his adopted country

My Country Left or Right?

December 16th 2006 05:52
My Country Left or Right

It is significant that with the passing of the significant masters of communism we still use terms to describe ourselves based upon its influence. Not so much the direct influence of communism but the influence of the cold war language and partisan tribes. .A commentator on any subject is instantly categorized and labeled as either left or right wing. A politician is guilty by association their party is either called the left or the right; their factions are either left or right; there leanings are either left or right. It is as there is nothing between the two extremes and that if a person says yes to one subject they have chosen which side of the divide the will forever be on. Hence if there is one issue that is considered to be left wing it has forever become the poison cup for the right wing. There is a whole list of adjectives to put in front of a person’s title to label them as either right or left. Often these labels have been designed to give maximum emotional impact: the radical cleric; the liberal doctor; the hard-line anything. The problem with emotional impacts is they can easily be used in attempt to stifle any thinking about issues put forward. A proposal put forward by a ‘hard-line’ politician has to fight against all the emotional baggage associated with the hard-line label

Dealing with Critics on Blogs

Dealing with Critics on Blogs

Opinions are everywhere and everyone has them. So many opinions abound that they can’t all be right. The problem is when some of these opinions are expressed there is controversy and counter opinions that grind at the emotions of it target. An attack upon a deeply held opinion can also be seen as an attack upon the person itself. Is it any wonder that there are some people who are so subjectively attached to their opinions that they refuse to even hear the opinion of others. Listen to talk back radio and watch some public debates there is a spectacle of intense emotion over ruling the airing of points of view

What is Culturalism?

Some people have hailed the end demise of Multiculturalism as the ushering in of some resurrection of a golden age, an age where we supposedly had only one culture and were one united people with a common purpose. I call this type of thinking Monoculturalism and it is the opposite of the much publicized Multiculturalism

Australian Red Neck with Red Hair – Pauline Hanson

Hanson
Please Wash Flag After Use
The ugliness of bigotry and superstition sit just below the thin veneer civilization. Scratch some people and these prejudices come to fore. Desperate politicians will readily use desperate methods like wedge politics and the race card. These tactics can work well as there is always a crowd who are eager to listen and have their worst fears amplified to justify their own deep seated ignorance. Life is hard for most people and often unfair in its reward for effort. Is it any wonder that there is an undercurrent of resentment that can tapped into from time to time. There is often a view that we would be living in a paradise if only the misfits could be weeded out or prevented from entering ‘our pure society’. Disgruntled and suffering people are looking for some form of escape and hope that their lives will improve. Hope is a strange thing that can change people’s attitude and motivation. The problem is that even false hope is just as attractive a real hope. Hence from time to time we see leaders rise to highest levels of power who are subsequently condemned as monsters in history

Sure we all bought the sentiment even though we got jerked around looking for aliens that only existed in televisions land. The ‘Truth’ is indeed out there. I don’t mean that I have found the answers to some dark government plot. I mean that I am of the opinion that truth must be objective if it is to exist at all
