15 People Killed on Crowded Bus in Sri Lankan North
Dec 6 - 2007
The area where the bomb blast took place 45km north of the city of Anradapura. A claymore mine was used to target a crowded bus of passengers. So far 15 people have died from the blast and 23 others were wounded. The prime suspect for the attack is the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) who have been fighting a separatist civil war since 1983.
Since early 2006 more than 5000 people have be killed due to fighting despite the fact that the cease fire is still officially in place. The total number of killed exceeds 70,000 in a nation of just under 20 million people. The cause for the sudden increase in deaths is due to hostilities between Sri Lankan Government forces and the LTTE. The current government is committed to using military force to the LTTE from areas that they occupy.
In the past couple of weeks there has been three high profile bombings by suspected LTTE cadres. The latest two have specifically targeted civilians and more should be expected.
Editorial Comment:
I know this area quite well and would call Anradapura as one of my favourite places on Earth. In my last visit to Sri Lanka there was relative peace due to the cease fire. Army security check points were on every main highway but at the same time the main highway to Jaffna was opened after nearly a decade of being closed due to war. The LTTE occupied jungles were visible in the distance from several places I visited but it was inadvisable to visit.
The cease fire brought with it an economic boom in Sri Lanka just as the current escalation of war has brought and economic recession and inflation.

Thus it is never safe there at the moment but where is?
I was one of a team that wore a blue beret (more as a target I feel) but I loved the people especially the kids they make ones heart bleed!
Thank you for the memories it brought many back to me.

Damn what a small world this is.
Blue beret?
Do you mean the UN blue?
I have a good friend in the UN in Sri Lanka.

Your friend will come home with some great memories others he will keep to himself for a long time.
I still love the place, the children and the simple, friendly people!

Tragic story of modern Sri Lanka is greed, corruption, entrenched class divisions, neopotism but mostly politicians.
More tragic because of how good and friendly the people are.
My friend is female and works in the Colombo office. She has been my wifes friend long before we met.

It is a strange set of circumstances that makes the place tick both sides are nice people both side tell you they are right and I just can't make a real choice when I'm treated like a kiing as they do everybody there are always flies in the ointment but is that not throughout life?

Lions helped a lot after the Tsunami, I remember.
Was it easy to get the containers through the Colombo ports? That place is total chaos.
I like anything outside of Colombo. I am not keem on Colombo at all. But Villages and Jungles are very cool places.

Damo, Colombo is not the ideal place to spend Xmas or even walk around one ou but it is the central point for everything good or bad.
The villagers is where the warmth is
